This project will restore and enhance Cornwall’s distinctive landscape character in Boscastle through the reconstruction and repair of traditional Cornish hedges.

Conserving and enhancing landscape character, creating and connecting habitats and mitigating the visual impacts of overhead power lines.
Project Overview
Guided by historical mapping, water-flow evidence and advice from our Partners, the project will reinstate traditional hedge ditch and buffer systems where appropriate. These features help manage water, improve infiltration, reduce flood risk and support natural pest control, building resilience in a landscape shaped by both agriculture and coastal influences.

People
Engaging with local communities through volunteer planting, skills events and improved access, while supporting local craftspeople and increasing understanding of natural flood management.
Place
Restoring distinctive Cornish hedges, enhancing landscape character, conserving local heritage and traditional craftsmanship by improving visual amenity along public routes.
Nature
Creating species-rich grassland and wildflower habitats, improving ecological connectivity, supporting pollinators and hedgehogs, enhancing biodiversity, and delivering more resilient habitats.
Climate
Reinstating traditional hedge ditch systems and buffer strips to slow water movement, increase infiltration, improve soil health, reduce flood risk, and build long-term resilience.
Project Detail
The project will also improve habitat connectivity for declining wildlife, including pollinators and hedgehogs, and create over 4 hectares of species-rich grassland. This will enhance biodiversity, soil health and the visual quality of the open pastoral landscape.
Images
Innovative no-fence collar technology will enable flexible rotational grazing by purebred Angus and Hereford cattle, helping establish deeper-rooted grasslands, improving access to steep valley slopes and removing the need for unattractive electric fencing. This will deliver benefits for both the farm and the local community, improving access along public rights of way.
