Project Overview

The Bodmin Moor Cornish Stone Wall Skills Taster Days were delivered by La Hayes Farm in partnership with CREST, with support from the Natural Beauty & The Beast Community Grant Fund. The project aimed to reconnect local people with the traditional skill of Cornish stone hedging while helping to conserve an important feature of the Bodmin Moor landscape.

Held at La Hayes Farm near Cardinham, the project provided hands-on opportunities for residents, farmers, and landowners from Bodmin, Liskeard, Launceston, and the surrounding area to learn how traditional Cornish stone hedges are built and maintained. Alongside developing practical skills, the project sought to increase understanding of the cultural heritage, environmental value, and craftsmanship that have shaped Cornwall’s distinctive landscape for centuries.

What took place?

Two full-day Cornish hedging taster sessions were delivered at La Hayes Farm during spring 2026. Participants received an introduction to the history and importance of Cornish stone hedges before working alongside experienced CREST trainers to restore a section of traditional stone hedge that had fallen into disrepair.

Throughout the days, participants learned the principles of hedge construction, selected and positioned stone, and gained practical experience of building a long-lasting boundary that also provides valuable habitat for wildlife. The events also included opportunities for participants to meet local farmers, share experiences, and enjoy time outdoors together.

Feedback highlighted the quality of the training, with participants describing the CREST team as approachable, knowledgeable, encouraging, and professional.

Outcomes

The project delivered a number of positive outcomes for both participants and the landscape:

• Trained local people in the traditional craft of Cornish stone hedging, helping to preserve an important heritage skill for future generations.
• Restored a section of traditional stone hedge that will continue to benefit the farm, wildlife, and local landscape.
• Increased participants’ understanding of the role Cornish hedges play in supporting biodiversity, farming, water management, and landscape character.
• Improved confidence to undertake hedge repairs at home, with many participants reporting they now felt capable of maintaining their own hedges.
• Delivered wellbeing benefits through outdoor physical activity, social interaction, and time spent in nature. Participants described the experience as rewarding, invigorating, mindful, and enjoyable.
• Encouraged interest in further training opportunities, with several participants expressing a desire to continue developing their skills and, in some cases, explore employment opportunities within the sector.
• Built stronger connections between farmers, local communities, and heritage organisations through a shared practical project.

Conclusion

The Bodmin Moor Cornish Stone Wall Skills Taster Days successfully combined heritage conservation, skills training, and community engagement. By providing hands-on experience in traditional hedge construction, the project helped participants gain a deeper appreciation for one of Cornwall’s most iconic landscape features while developing practical skills and confidence.

The restored hedge now stands as a lasting legacy of the project, while the knowledge, enthusiasm, and connections developed throughout the training days will continue to support the conservation of Cornwall’s historic landscape for years to come.
