Premier Archaeological Landscape (PAL) Review

The PAL Review has now been completed and is available on our website (below). Working closely with Heritage and Landscape colleagues, the project team was pleased to appoint Pete Herring, David Attwell, and Dan Ratcliffe to lead this critical element of work.

Their extensive knowledge of Dartmoor, combined with their professional involvement in the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project and previous heritage initiatives, made them ideally placed to undertake this review. Drawing on their deep understanding of the Moor and the PALs, they have assessed outcomes since the PALs were first established, highlighted their significance, and engaged with land managers to explore future approaches to archaeological site management.

The review offers valuable insights and practical recommendations, including resources to support landowners and managers with future grant applications. The team’s previous work has consistently delivered high-quality outcomes, and their experience in both farming and heritage management on Dartmoor has once again proved invaluable.

Reassessing the 22 current PAL areas to determine whether their boundaries and management priorities need updating.

Stakeholder consultation will form a key part of this process, ensuring that opinions from all relevant parties are included, especially regarding grazing practices and heritage conservation.

A clear vision for each PAL will be produced, with recommendations for Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMs) and other grant support.
